Framesby take U17 sevens rugby honours
Framesby took the honours in the Langerry Framesby sevens rugby tournament with hard-fought win over Marlow in the U17 final at the Framesby school campus in Port Elizabeth on Saturday. The tournament was part of the national Twizza sevens series and the winners qualified for the finals to be played in October.
Grey High won the U15 sevens rugby, while Framesby excelled on the netball court by winning the Fast5 U17 and U15 divisions. In the runners-up spot in each category were Nico Malan.
After overcoming a stiff challenge in the Cup semifinals against Outeniqua, which they won 21-17, Framesby struck early in the final with Marlow and quickly ran up a 19-0 lead.
Just before halftime, however, Marlow scored their first try to keep their hopes alive and when they crossed again under the poles after the break, the Framesby lead was cut to seven points.
But the hosts were able to hold on for a well-deserved victory after two days of tough competition.
In the other Cup semifinal, Marlow excelled to defeat the hitherto unbeaten Grey High 21-12.
Tries just before and after the break gave the Cradock team a telling 21-7 lead and although the Grey lads scored a second try, Marlow’s defensive resolve saw them advance to the final.
The U15 competition was marked by a titanic battle between Brandwag and Framesby in the Cup semifinal. The match was deadlocked at 12-12 after fulltime and the three minutes of extra time came into play.
The rules made provision for a sudden-death victory, so the first team to score would get the win. Framesby pressed hard for most of the period but could not crack the Brandwag defence and eventually the Uitenhage side were able to turn the ball over and scramble it into touch with the final hooter having been blown.
This gave Brandwag the win by virtue of having scored the first try in the play-off match. However, they were not able to match the pace and power of the Grey team in the final and four tries saw them facing a 24-0 deficit early in the second half.To their credit, Brandwag came back with two tries, but Grey also scored one more for a well-deserved 31-14 victory.
